You may have heard about the Twitter Files. This is a huge document dump of internal communications, emails, memos, spreadsheets, and other forms of data from inside the social media platform Twitter. These files were held in the strictest confidence by Twitter until the company was taken over by Elon Musk. Musk is a champion of free speech, and he took it upon himself to release these files to show how bad the censorship was and how corrupt the entire social media industry is. Twitter's wrongdoing included pushing government propaganda and squashing the truth about COVID, Ukraine, election rigging, and other hot-button topics where the progressives wanted to push false narratives and censor dissenting views. These files were handed over to some top journalists, including Matt Taibbi and Bari Weiss. They were given free rein to review the evidence and then publish the results with their own commentary (of course, most of the publication process took place on Twitter itself after it was liberated by Musk). The revelations, as reported in this article, were shocking. We already knew that the COVID vaccines don't stop the infection and don't stop the spread of the disease and that masks and social distancing are useless when it comes to a respiratory infection transmitted by a virus that can barely be seen under an electron microscope. If you said these things or mentioned the deadly side effects of the so-called vaccines, you would find your message had limited distribution or you were blocked or had to put up with "disinformation" stickers on your postings. For repeat offenders, the censorship included having your account disabled entirely. Of course, suppressing the truth about COVID cost many lives. This censorship was not limited to criticizing government lies about COVID. It also included the Hunter Biden laptop story, and information about how Republican voters were disenfranchised in the 2016, 2020, and 2022 elections. What we did not know (and was revealed in the Twitter Files) is that the FBI was directly involved with the censorship. Many former FBI officials worked at Twitter. There was a direct digital portal from the FBI headquarters to Twitter headquarters that allowed the FBI to single out accounts for censorship. Twitter likes to pretend they are not subject to the First Amendment because they are a private company. But that defense falls down when the government, which is subject to the First Amendment, is directly involved in issuing censorship orders, as it was in this case. If Twitter was acting as an arm of the government in neo-fascist censorship, there's no reason to believe that Facebook, Google and other platforms were any less egregious in their actions. It seems the entire social media universe is rotten to the core when it comes to censoring dissenting views. Twitter under Musk has exposed the game. Let's hope the new Congress can follow the thread and put an end to it.
